Fine dining on the Kings Road…

The Vibe

Medlar is the epitome of sophistication, a restaurant that sits unassumingly at the Fulham end of the King’s Road with a quiet confidence that people who visit once will return over and over again. It’s not easy to escape London’s current love affair with gastro pubs, communal tables and canteen style eateries yet Medlar turns its back on it all, offering instead tables with proper cloths, silver cutlery and a polished, discreet service that doesn’t involve young foreign waiters shouting loudly to their colleagues. The restaurant is romantic, traditional and refined yet with a modern twist, a place that feels special without being stuffy.

The Order

The food is exceptional, and the fixed price menu is incredibly good value (3 courses for £39.50). For her: the crab raviolo with samphire, followed by the monkfish with broadbeans finished with the elderflower and prosecco jelly. For him: the foie gras, under blade fillet and cheese board or chocolate torte. The fixed menu is ideal for dating -you’ll appreciate its simplicity, a pleasant change from squinting at scrawled chalk boards or frenzied minutes spent trying not to glimpse too obviously at the prices next to your desired dishes. Medlar’s critically acclaimed wine list will not leave you lacking for pleasant accompaniments to your food, and starting with a glass of the Andre Jacquart house champagne suits the whole ambience of this place

The Game

This isn’t a restaurant to be played, it doesn’t rely on a buzz so book a table at a staggeringly sensible time like 7:30 or 8pm. Turn the dress code up a notch with shirts for boys and a dress or at least heels for girls. Have a glass of champagne then linger over your food and good wine whilst enjoying making grown up conversation and being somewhere a little fanciful. Hop in a taxi afterwards to avoid admitting that you’re close to the World’s End bus stop. If you’re not heading back to theirs, continue the night with a well chosen spot for a quiet nightcap away from the usual buzz and booze of the Kings Road bars.

The Faults

Location wise you’re not in the midst of the action, yet a short walk (once you’ve been kindly bid goodbye and left feeling extravagantly spoilt) will take you back into the heart of Chelsea.

Sex Factor

3 – you’re not going to spend the night snogging their face off in here. You’ll be on your best behaviour, until you leave and realise the bubbles have most definitely gone to your head.
